Do you want to adopt or buy a German Shepherd puppy, but don’t know how to determine its gender(male or a female, boy or a girl)? You’re in the right place.

In this post, we will demonstrate you about how to know the gender of German Shepherd puppies with real examples of different aged puppies (1 week old to 6 weeks old), so that you can confidently buy a German Shepherd puppy or any puppy without a slight doubt in mind about its gender.

A puppy’s gender can’t be accurately identified from its physical appearance or behavior. The most authentic, accurate, and quickest way of determining the puppy’s gender is by examining its genital(reproductive organ).

But determining the gender of a puppy from its genital can be very tricky for a person who goes to buy/adopt a puppy for the first time or who has not enough knowledge about the dogs, because in early weeks & months the genital(reproductive organ) of a female puppy appears similar to the male puppy’s genital, as we have thoroughly explained below.

This is one of the reasons that dog breeders and sellers often make people fool by selling female puppy at higher rates by convincing them that it is a male puppy. Subsequently when a puppy reaches 4 to 6 months when genitals of the puppies begin to visible clearly, they come to know that they have been cheated by the dog seller.

01. How to Know a German Shepherd Puppy’s Gender From Its Genital

In this section, we will demonstrate how to accurately determine the gender of a German Shepherd puppy from its genital with real examples of different aged puppies.

Below are the two 7 weeks old German Shepherd puppies. At your left side is a male puppy and at your right side is the female puppy.

You can see clearly that the opening point of the male puppy’s genital is far from the tail and almost reaches the abdomen (belly). Whereas the opening point of the female puppy’s genital is closer to the tail. Though the structure and shape of the female puppy’s genital are different from the male’s, but in early stages hair make the top of the female genital like a pointed spike similar to male’s, and this is where most people get wrong and assume female puppies as male.

These are the 1 week old male (left) and female (right) German Shepherd puppies. The male puppy’s opening point looks slightly lower, it’s because of the wrong camera angle, so don’t get confused. The opening point of the female puppy is not visible in the picture because of her paw.

These are the 3 weeks old male (left) and a female(right) German Shepherd puppies. The distance and position of their genitals’ opening point from the tail are clearly determining the gender.

These are the six week old German Shepherd male(left) and female(right) puppies with stand up ears. It is a perfect example of why people fail to identify the gender of puppies. Look at the female puppy’s genital, it is covered by hair and its top appears like a pointed spike similar to male puppy’s genital. To get out of the confusion, follow the rule i.e. check the distance of opening point of puppy’s genital from the tail, as we have already guided above.

02. Other Ways to Know the Gender of German Shepherd Puppy

There are some other ways such as Physical Appearance, Behavior, and Urination Posture to identify the puppy’s gender, however, these differences become more apparent as they mature and should not be solely relied upon in very young puppies.

01. Physical Appearance & Behavior

To identify the gender of German Shepherd puppy from its physical appearance needs lot of expertise and experience. An average person may not be able to judge a puppy from its physical appearance, because it’s very hard to differentiate them, as you can see in the examples below.

Male German Shepherd puppies tend to have larger heads and chests, reflecting their natural tendency to be larger and more muscular than females when fully grown. Their paws may also appear slightly bigger and broader. Females tend to have more delicate facial features and a narrower frame overall.

These are the two 10 weeks old female(left) and male(right) German Shepherd puppies. You can see that the male puppy looks slightly more stronger than the female puppy.

Personality can provide hints too, as male pups often exhibit more dominant, assertive behavior even at a young age compared to the more docile and submissive temperament of females.

These are the two 12 weeks old long coat female(left) and male(right) German Shepherd puppies. You can notice that the front legs and jaws of male puppy are bigger and broader.

These are the two 11 weeks old male (wearing blue collar, semi-erect ears) and female(wearing purple collar) working line German Shepherd puppies. You can see that the female puppy has delicate facial features and a narrower frame overall. The male puppy looks assertive.

At your left there is a 16 weeks old female German Shepherd puppy and at your right there is a 14 weeks old male German Shepherd puppy. It is quite difficult to know which one is male and which one is female.

02. Observe Puppy’s Urination Posture

Another way to determine the gender of a puppy is by observing its urination posture although this is not a reliable indicator in very young puppies.

The 4 to 6 months old male puppies may begin to lift their leg to urinate while females continue to squat. Male puppies tend to lift a leg earlier than female puppies. By this age, the genitals of puppies are also larger and more visible.
